ACUA To Host Open House for High School Environmental Career Explorers Program on September 20 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

High School students curious about environmental careers are invited to the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) Explorer Post Open House on Thursday, September 20. The Open House introduces students to some of the opportunities ACUA’s Explorer Post will offer during the coming school year.

Explorer Posts serve young people in high school with worksite-based programs designed to give hands-on training in career fields. Many people are familiar with Explorer Posts for law enforcement or firefighting, which also operate under the umbrella of the Boy Scouts of America’s Learning for Life Program.  ACUA’s Post focuses on environmental careers.

“ACUA offers a wide range of employment options; but many people have no idea about the scope or importance of our services. This is a great opportunity to introduce high school students to a variety of job options they might not have considered or even known about,” notes ACUA president Rick Dovey. “Serving as an Explorer Post, we can share information about the critical work ACUA employees do which contributes to protecting the environment.”

Each month, the Explorer group visits a different part of ACUA’s facilities to meet with staff and learn about operations there. “Our staff has developed engaging, hands on activities that enable to students to really get a good understanding of the variety of skills and experience that’s needed to keep things running at the Authority, as well as a better appreciation for the value and importance of these jobs,” Dovey added.

Currently, the program runs from September to May, with Explorers attending one meeting per month. These meetings are in the early evening for approximately one and a half hours. There is a fee to participate and financial assistance may be available. To learn more students and their families are encouraged to attend the Open House at ACUA’s Recycling Center, located at 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township on Thursday, September 20 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. or to visit www.acua.com/explorer for more information.
