Mercury-Containing Devices

Home > Disposal & Recycling > Mercury-Containing Devices

Mercury should never be disposed of with regular trash because it is a hazardous material that could cause harm to humans and animals if it were to find its way into the environment. You may not think that you are throwing away mercury because you are unaware that it is a component of typical household items. Please make yourself familiar with the items in the following list and then dispose of them properly at one of ACUA's Household Hazardous Waste Days.

Mercury-containing Devices may include:
  • Flourescent Lights
  • Compact Fluorescent Lamps(CFL)
  • Non-digital Thermometers where the liquid is silver in color
  • Barometers / Manometers
  • A variety of switches (mostly older ones before new regulations)

Home Depot and Lowe's offer recycling for CFLs too!

Home Depot's national chain of home improvement stores has initiated a program to recycle compact fluorescent light bulbs, whether purchased there or not. Click here for more information.

Lowe's also accepts CFLs and other materials like batteries and cell phones for recycling. Click here to read more.
