The Township of Hamilton, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA), and The Recycling Partnership are pleased to announce that Hamilton Township households will receive new 96-gallon recycling carts for curbside, single-stream recycling collection.
The carts will replace the smaller bins currently used for residential recycling and come with wheels for easy maneuvering and attached lids to keep recyclables dry and secure. Delivery will begin on November 4.
“We are excited to provide Hamilton Township residents with recycling carts,” said Mayor Art Schenker. “The carts will streamline collection, hold more recycling material and keep our streets cleaner on recycling day. This is a big win for our community.”
The Township and ACUA applied for and received a grant from The Recycling Partnership, an organization committed to building a better recycling system in U.S. communities and states. The township was selected to receive grant support because of its dedication to advancing recycling in the community. The grant from The Recycling Partnership, with support from the American Beverage Association’s “Every Bottle Back” initiative, will provide more than 9,000 new carts and funding for education and outreach.
The township asks that residents continue to do their part by placing only recyclable materials in their carts. This includes glass jars and bottles, aluminum and steel cans, paper products, flattened cardboard, and plastic bottles, tubs, jugs and containers labeled with numbers 1, 2 or 5. To limit contamination, residents are asked to give food and drink containers a quick rinse prior to placing items in the recycling cart.
Some items that should never go into your recycling cart include plastic film or bags, electronics, and batteries. While well-intentioned, non-recyclable items can cause serious issues for workers and sorting equipment.
Atlantic County communities that have already switched to carts have seen an increase in recycling rates, which also leads to a decrease in trash costs.
“Carts increase recycling rates, keep communities cleaner, and are safer for ACUA employees,” said ACUA President Matthew DeNafo. “We were happy to assist Township of Hamilton in obtaining this grant and we look forward to serving the community with improved recycling collection.”
Residents can begin using their new carts beginning the week of November 11.
