Clean Your Community for a Chance to Win $500!

Sep 24, 2025

The Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA), in partnership with the Atlantic County Clean Communities Program, is excited to announce its 2025 Fall Litter Challenge.

The challenge invites groups of Atlantic County residents to clear litter from roads, parks, or other public areas between October 6 and 24. The group that collects the most litter will take home rewards: $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $100 for third place. A $100 prize will also be awarded to the group with the strangest litter find.

“Residents can join us in keeping Atlantic County clean by removing litter from local public spaces,” said Atlantic County Clean Communities Coordinator Rebecca Turygan. “You don’t need to be an established volunteer group to participate. Any resident can grab a few friends to get started,” Turygan said.

Volunteers are invited to create a team (limited to 15 people or less) to remove litter from public areas throughout the two-week period. Teams must report each cleanup, including the number of bags collected and pictures to verify, through an online form at acua.com/litterchallenge.  Safety gear and supplies can be provided by ACUA before the challenge begins.

“Litter is an issue everyone can get behind,” said ACUA President Matthew DeNafo. “This challenge provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy time with friends or family while doing something positive for the environment.”

ACUA began administering the Atlantic County Clean Communities program in 2005. Since then, more than 60 percent of Atlantic County roadways have been adopted. Over the last year, volunteers performed 317 cleanups, removed 1,840 bags of litter, and cleaned 445 miles.
