ACUA and its emergency contractor, Lafayette, are currently responding to a failure in a manhole on Shore Road in Northfield.
Shore Road is currently closed in both directions from Mt Vernon to Northfield Avenues as repairs are made.
ACUA will provide updates as they become available.
Monday, December 8, 2025
3 p.m.
The sinkhole path has been successfully blocked. The sinkhole is expected to be backfilled and sealed with asphalt the morning of Tuesday, December 9. Shore Rd. remains closed as these actions are taken, and police will be present to direct traffic.
Tuesday, December 9, 2025
10:30 a.m.
Lafayette is currently backfilling the sinkhole and repairing the roadway. This work is expected to be completed by 3 p.m. today, allowing Shore Road to reopen to traffic overnight.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 10, a manhole-lining subcontractor will rehabilitate the interior of the existing manhole using a spray-in-place structural liner. This work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. During this time, Shore Road will be closed to traffic and a detour will be in place.
The structural rehabilitation coating will allow the City of Northfield’s contractor to replace the final section of its forcemain pipe that connects to ACUA's manhole. This work is tentatively planned for next week.
Wednesday, December 10, 2025
4 p.m.
The manhole lining has been rehabilitated. Shore Road was reopened to traffic at 4 p.m.
The City of Northfield is tentatively scheduled to complete their tie-in to this manhole next week.
