ACUA Extinguishing Fire at Compost Facility

Aug 02, 2026

The Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) and local fire officials are working to extinguish a fire that began this morning in a compost pile at its Environmental Park facility in Egg Harbor Township. High internal temperatures within the compost pile, combined with hot, dry weather, are the likely cause of the fire. ACUA staff are working with the fire department to extinguish the fire, and it is currently under control.

The fire is NOT located in any trash material at the ACUA landfill or transfer station as some reports have incorrectly stated.

UPDATE:

The fire was contained to a vegetative/mulch pile isolated within ACUA’s compost facility. Due to its location, there was no impact nor damage to structures or equipment. ACUA sincerely thanks all local fire departments and emergency management officials who quickly responded to the scene and safely extinguished the fire.
