Vape pens and e-cigarettes are hazardous materials and should NOT be placed in your trash or recycling.
These devices contain lithium-ion batteries, which can spark fires if crushed or damaged. Fires caused by improperly disposed batteries have occurred in trash cans, collection trucks, transfer stations, and landfills, putting workers and facilities at serious risk.
Many vape devices also contain nicotine (e-liquid), which is highly toxic, can cause serious health effects, and is harmful to the environment. E-liquids should never be poured down the drain or rinsed into sinks.
Vape pens and e-cigarettes that contain cannabis pose the same risks and must be handled the same way, as they also contain lithium-ion batteries.
How to Dispose
Vape pens and e-cigarettes should be disposed of through a proper collection program.
ACUA accepts vape pens and e-cigarettes at Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off events held throughout the year. These scheduled collection days are free and open to only Atlantic County residents.
Some local vape shops may also accept vape pens and e-cigarettes for recycling or safe disposal.
