Expansion Option
ACUA is researching an expansion project that could provide space to landfill trash in Atlantic County for an additional 5-8 years. The space we are researching is highlighted in yellow below:
Throughout its existence, the landfill footprint has changed several times. The most recent permit modification occurred in 2006, which added two new landfill cells and mechanically stabilized earthen (MSE) walls to the landfill. This project added 13 years of capacity.
Waste Conversion Technology
ACUA is also procuring waste conversion technology that could provide an alternative to landfilling and have the potential to create energy or recycled by-products. If viable, a project could be built at its existing Environmental Park and provide a sustainable waste disposal solution for the next 30+ years.
Three vendors with the qualifications to develop such a project were selected in December 2023 to submit formal proposals. The RFP is currently in review with the NJ Office of the State Comptroller. Once it is finalized, it will be released to the three vendors.
Waste Transfer
ACUA is also reviewing options to transfer waste to other landfill locations. Our team has solicited pricing for hauling and disposal of waste at other sites several times in the last five years to test the pricing market. Prior to the construction of the landfill, ACUA operated solely as a transfer station. Operations can adapt to accommodate this if other alternatives are not viable or as a bridge until longer-term solutions are developed.
