What Is It?
The quick-drying, spray-on cover is made with portland cement, fibers, and clay. It adheres to the surface of the landfill and acts as a barrier from the elements.
The $115,000 investment prevents erosion and the need for costly daily cover. The project was completed in-house by ACUA’s landfill team.
Why Cover?
To properly maintain the landfill and keep trash contained, a 12-inch layer of dirt is applied to active areas of the landfill each day. This daily cover often needs to be replenished because it does not withstand heavy rain or wind.
Alternatively, the “posi-shell” intermediate cover provides longer-lasting protection. It better prevents rain or wind from eroding the surface, which saves ACUA the cost and time to apply daily cover to these areas. It can be used in areas that are inactive but not yet ready for permanent capping and closure.
The intermediate cover also helps reduce odors by keeping gases contained. The gases will then flow into our landfill gas collection system rather than escape into the atmosphere.
The project is one of many ACUA has employed to maintain the landfill, prevent odors, and save money. ACUA previously installed a temporary laminate cover over 30 acres of its landfill. This temporary cover has greatly reduced maintenance costs and odors. Other investments include vapor misters, a hydrogen sulfide treatment system, and ACUA’s extensive gas collection system.
