Meet ACUA Staff: Joe

Joe joined ACUA in 2022. He is a graduate of Penn State and holds a Wildlife and Fishery Science degree. This job especially suits his interests in the outdoors and wildlife. He previously worked at both a landfill and airport and brings that unique experience with him to the job.

Joe’s day starts at sunrise, which changes depending on the time of year.  It can be as early as 5:30 a.m. in the summer or as late as 7:15 a.m. in the winter. He conducts wildlife surveys and works to safely and efficiently deter wildlife from the active area of the landfill and around the Environmental Park.

"ACUA has to take a lot of precautions because we’re located so close to the Atlantic City International Airport. Wildlife deterrence is an incredibly important job. Because the airport is a joint military base, they perform training for active combat. These people are risking their lives for their country, I take a lot of pride in doing my part to make sure they can safely occupy the airspace above the landfill."

Joe also oversees a team of interns that help share coverage of the landfill throughout the week. Many of the interns are recent graduates or soon-to-be graduates of Stockton University. Joe enjoys offering guidance and advice to students as they are just beginning to explore careers in the environmental science field.

During Joe’s time at ACUA, he’s already upgraded and streamlined the wildlife technician data collection system by using new software on tablets to better predict and anticipate wildlife behavior. He’s incorporated a pre-vehicle system check to the beginning of each shift and has worked to stay ahead of any repairs needed with vehicle care preventative maintenance. Joe is a new member of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and he looks forward to growing with ACUA!
