Future of Solid Waste Management

Future of Solid Waste Management

ACUA is prudently planning for the future of solid waste management in Atlantic County.  As part of these plans, we are researching several avenues for waste disposal.
ACUA Landfill

ACUA Landfill

ACUA's landfill accepts nearly 2 million lbs. of trash every day from Atlantic County homes and businesses.

In addition to operating the landfill on Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township, ACUA also oversees the closed Pinelands Park Landfill on Ocean Heights Avenue in Egg Harbor Township.
Posi-Shell Intermediate Cover

Posi-Shell Intermediate Cover

ACUA installed an intermediate “Posi-Shell” cover to approximately 20 acres of its landfill to help reduce odors and prevent erosion in 2022.
Landfill Wall Construction

Landfill Wall Construction

ACUA is increasing the life of the landfill in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, with the construction of a mechanically stabilized earthen (MSE) berm that wraps around the exterior of the landfill. The space between the newly constructed berm and the slope of the existing landfill is used as additional space to store solid waste.

Landfill Gas and Odor Control

Landfill Gas and Odor Control

The Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) solid waste landfill located in Egg Harbor Township, NJ, accepts trash from Atlantic County homes and businesses. The landfill began accepting waste in 1992 and is expected to contain approximately 9.9 million tons of garbage by closing.

Odors naturally occur as trash decomposes in the landfill. As waste breaks down, it produces various gases. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane are the most prevalent. Other gases, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), can also be found in smaller quantities. Wind direction, temperature changes and weather patterns impact the spread and intensity of these odors.
