Meet ACUA Staff: John

Sep 18, 2023

John always knew he wanted to work with heavy equipment. Prior to working for ACUA, he hauled debris for many years. He decided to apply to ACUA after seeing a sign on the front lawn of the facility. In June 2003, he was hired as a Temporary Driver in Collections, then moved to Full-Time Night Shift Equipment Operator II.

John now works as an Equipment Operator II on the day shift. His day varies from operating the tub grinder to loading trailers of recycling for Mazza Recycling, delivering EcoProducts and even helping in the Scalehouse. John takes a lot of pride working for ACUA and recommends anyone that is new to the field to come in with an open mind.

“Some people are turned off by waste, but it’s something that everyone makes. Not everyone considers that waste can really provide a great career.”

Since working at ACUA, John has embarked on numerous training and certification opportunities available to him, including Compost Certification from Rutgers University, CPR and AED training from Red Cross, Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), and Forklift Certification. In 2008, John won the regional Road-E-O competition by taking a landfill compacter through a winding obstacle course.

Why He Likes Working at ACUA

“The teamwork at ACUA is one of the best parts of the job.  Everyone works together to achieve a goal.  You can’t beat the benefits, pension, and time off – these are things that aren’t offered too many other places.”
